How it works
Like all follicular unit transplantation, facial hair restoration is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that typically takes from 5 to 8 hours to perform under local freezing in our fully accredited private clinic. Follicular units for transplantation are generally obtained from the back and sides of the scalp using either follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit strip surgery (FUT). Sometimes, we can take hairs from the upper neck below the jawline to transplant higher up into the beard, moustache or sideburns. Most patients report minimal discomfort and a short period of recovery and healing following beard transplantation. The transplanted beard will grow and continue to thicken and grow naturally and permanently and can be groomed and “manscaped” normally.

Results
Facial hair transplantation normally results in some initial swelling and scabbing that resolves within approximately one week. Hair follicles transplanted to the beard and face will generally start grow in at about the 3-month mark after the procedure. There can sometimes be some small pimples and ingrown hairs as the follicles begin to grow. The transplanted facial hair will continue to thicken over time, with the full effect seen at the 8-12 month mark.

How many transplants will I need?
The number of hair follicles used in a beard and facial hair transplant depends on a number of factors, most importantly the area that needs to be covered, and the characteristics of the scalp donor hair. A larger session to address the “goatee” area, up to the sideburns might be in the range of 2000-2200 follicular units, which would be about 5000-5500 individual hairs. Smaller areas would require fewer grafts. Some patients will return for a second session down the road in order to add thickness, cover more area, or fine tune their results.
What is the recovery time after facial hair transplantation?
Facial hair transplantation is performed under local freezing. There is generally some swelling, redness and crusting that resolves within about one week. Pain is generally minimal. Most people would choose to take approximately one week off of in-person work. Strenuous exercise and swimming should be avoided for about 2 weeks.
Can facial hair transplantation be combined with other procedures?
Many patients that undergo beard and facial hair transplants also undergo other facial cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. In general, these procedures in a separate session from hair transplantation.
