Does Coffee Affect Hair Loss?

If you’re experiencing hair loss, could it be due to caffeine consumption?

Life can be hectic and stressful, often leading to the consumption of caffeinated beverages like coffee to keep up. However, you may also be concerned about hair loss and wonder if your caffeine intake contributes to it.

Does Caffeine Cause Hair Loss?

The short answer is no; caffeine does not cause hair loss. However, several factors must be considered when consuming large quantities of caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, soda, energy drinks, or tea.

Caffeinated beverages can contain various ingredients, some of which are beneficial for hair health and others potentially harmful. A poor diet can negatively affect hair loss, and caffeine consumption can amplify stress levels, an essential factor in hair loss.

Stress can increase levels of cortisol, a hormone that regulates hair growth. High cortisol levels can lead to hair loss. At the Toronto Hair Transplant Clinic of Drs. Philip Solomon and Mark Korman, we often see the effects of stress-related hair loss and offer targeted treatments to address it.

Caffeine, Coffee, and Its Effect on Your Hair and Health

Caffeine comprises various compounds, including dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S). These hormones produce androgens and estrogens, which can trigger hair loss, particularly in women. However, caffeine’s impact on these hormone levels is generally low.

Caffeine can act as a vasoconstrictor and diuretic. Vasoconstriction could reduce blood flow to hair follicles, but this effect is unlikely with moderate caffeine consumption. As a diuretic, excessive caffeine consumption can lead to dehydration, making hair brittle and prone to breakage. To counter this, drink plenty of water if you consume caffeinated beverages.

Interestingly, some scientific data suggests that caffeine can stimulate hair growth. Studies comparing caffeine with conventional hair growth treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride have shown potential benefits.

Can Caffeine Actually Make Your Hair Grow!?

While coffee and hair loss seem linked, research shows that caffeine can promote hair growth. Some people use caffeine-infused hair care products, such as shampoos, conditioners and serums, to stimulate hair growth. Caffeine is known to increase blood circulation, which can help prevent damage to hair follicles.

Drink Your Coffee, Cheers!

Caffeine alone does not cause hair loss. There is no evidence drinking coffee or other caffeine-containing beverages hurts hair growth. However, excessive consumption, which is exceptionally high in sugar, can lead to other causes of hair loss, such as poor diet and stress.
